Ever since I setup mailcow I have been annoyed that it runs with docker volumes and updates with a script. This makes it imposible to run how I want. I feel the main benefit of docker should be all the files needed are backed up and I can use the docker compose file to spin the container up anywhere.
I have tried may times to fix these problems in mailcow and have always failed. So I finally gave up with mailcow and started looking at other options. I quite quickly found docker mailserver as my main option. I don’t know if I didn’t see it the first time round or if I was scared of by the lack of a GUI. What ever the case now I am happy to use the command line for everything.
The inital install was easy and I got basic functionality working very quickly. The next thing I did was export all my emails through sogo and then just draged and droped them into my new inbox and the uploaded fine. However this is where the easy bit ended. SSL was terrible I don’t know why but neather Imap or SMTP would use SSL for encryption. In the end I did get it fixed however I spent so long tinkering I don’t know what worked or why. I have no faith I could get it working again however hopeful I won’t have to. The only thing left to do is a backup test and then I may delete my mailcow data.
