Over the summer I got a R1500 G3 ups for my server it is quite over kill however i hope to connect my POE switch and starlink internet to also keep wifi up during a power outage. To that end it would be rather nice if my server actually shut down as the power was running out rather than just continuing until it dies when the battery runs out.
The last piece of this puzzle was a usb a to usb b cable which I recently got. This connection goes from my ups to my r720 on which i decided to install nut. The server is running proxmox as its primary OS so I was able to install nut with apt however the first few guides I followed ended up not working for what ever reason. The one that finally worked was this one. Once I had that sorted I setup a web nut docker container in terraform which all went smoothly I hope to eventually add the stats to graphana for data visulisation but for now i am happy.

ZFS Ram consumtion

I had for a while been noticing large spikes in the disk backlog according to netdata as wells as swap useage errors. The swap useage errors especially were wierd because the VM can ballon up to 200GB of RAM and i know i am not using that much. These errors combined were leading to system freezes where i had to go into proxmox and stop the VM and then start it.
So to start investigating i ran

Proxmox Install

I decided that I wanted to use Proxmox as my main operating system as it has a large community and a large available library of tutorials. So i followed this guide (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZcOlW-DwrU&t=487s) which made installing relitivly easy. The only small issue i found post install was that the 4 drives i had setup for proxmox were set up as 2 storage sections called local and local-zfs. I still don’t fully understand what happened here but i just put important files on local-zfs and it seem to work fine.

Proxmox no valid subscription warning

I decided to finally remove that annoying pop up that appears every time I log into my server. I found this guide (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ftWGupG66A). i ignored the first section about the repositories but the section about removing the warning was clear and easy to follow. Once I had restarted the service I went to check the web UI and I was still getting the warning so I checked in a incognito tab and saw it was gone I just need to wait for my cache to update.

Installing casaOS

I began by looking for a iso file as since the name was OS i presumed it was just that an Operating System but no after some reading I found the install script. I ran it on a ubuntu server VM and it just installed on its own and worked just like that. The UI is using port 80 which I can’t see a way to change so I would prefer if it was a more random port so 80 could be a service you can’t change but it works fine and I look forward to playing around with it.

Opnsense

I began with goal of making a cyber security home lab for learning on my r720. The first part of this was to set up a separate network so I could change settings without taking down my familys internet. So I installed Opnsense on a vm and added two network device my normal bridge(WAN) and a bridge that is bound to nothing(LAN) I booted into the live environment and ran the installer. When it rebooted I checked the assignments and found that the wan and lan were the wrong way round. I changed that and the interface ip and then connected my kali box to the LAN and accessed the interface.

Virtual Box to Proxmox

Today I moved my last 2 VMs (Kali and Android x86)off my Desktop on to my server it was really simple. I just exported the VMs as raw from Virtual Box then moved them to my server using scp once that was done I created a VM as normal on Proxmox and then deleted the boot drive and added the raw disk I had transferred.

Gaming VM

I started by cloning my windows VM template and that went fine my next job was to see what games I could share. Steam was easy apart from the amount of times I had to log in and out to make it work. And Xbox was even quicker with me just signing into microsoft store with my account and into xbox the the second account (the only game this doesn’t work for is minecraft java). The VM is only using integrated graphics however I will probably pass through my current gpu when I upgrade. But it can run most 2d games but struggles at games like minecraft and rocket league.

MakeMKV

One of the main reasons I was so happy with the server I got was the fact it included a DVD drive. This was very useful as the last DVD drive I had been using was in a old laptop and stopped working a few months earlier.

I downloaded and extracted makemkv in a nfs share on my proxmox host os. I can then run the command “makemkvcon mkv dev:/dev/sr0 all .” this rips the disk to my nas which then allows me to put it though handbrake on a windows 11 vm.

Dynamic DNS

Today I set up my DDNS for my domains that need to link to my dynamic public ip address. I followed this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI-XxnyWFnM by NetworkChuck which worked amazingly. I didn’t want to run it on its own vm so I made a ubuntu container in Proxmox and apart from mixing up api and global api keys I managed everything first try.

Docker Install

I began by creating a VM and adding a nfs share however my first attempt I installed Docker with the Ubuntu installer this lead to a wide range of problems so justed deleted the VM and started again. On my next attempt I made sure to only install docker after using apt install. I managed to get Portainer to work first try and then just had to move my old containers off my PC, this was not to bad as i just moved the files to the network share and then translated the compose files to the Portainer container options (I later found out that i could do it with docker compose files and switched most of them to that).

Pcie Pass through

To be able to use ZFS on my planed TrueNAS VM i first had to pass through the six drives i would be using in my pool (I chose to do 6 drives per vdev with RAIDZ2). Luckily i had already flashed the drive controller so all i had to do was a few bios settings and then the actual pass through this all went without issue and a special thanks to TechHut for his very useful guide (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkK-9_-2oko&t=310s).

The install for TrueNAS was very simple as it was something i had practiced multiple times as a VM on my PC to mess around with smb shares. I decided to install scale as the choice between core and scale seemed very easy for me as i felt that while core was a small bit faster scale had a far more promising future and had plenty of people working to improve its speed.
