I began by creating a VM and adding a nfs share however my first attempt I installed Docker with the Ubuntu installer this lead to a wide range of problems so justed deleted the VM and started again. On my next attempt I made sure to only install docker after using apt install. I managed to get Portainer to work first try and then just had to move my old containers off my PC, this was not to bad as i just moved the files to the network share and then translated the compose files to the Portainer container options (I later found out that i could do it with docker compose files and switched most of them to that).

To be able to use ZFS on my planed TrueNAS VM i first had to pass through the six drives i would be using in my pool (I chose to do 6 drives per vdev with RAIDZ2). Luckily i had already flashed the drive controller so all i had to do was a few bios settings and then the actual pass through this all went without issue and a special thanks to TechHut for his very useful guide (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkK-9_-2oko&t=310s).

The install for TrueNAS was very simple as it was something i had practiced multiple times as a VM on my PC to mess around with smb shares. I decided to install scale as the choice between core and scale seemed very easy for me as i felt that while core was a small bit faster scale had a far more promising future and had plenty of people working to improve its speed. ...
